Seasickness can be mild or completely incapacitating for some people. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, and cold sweats. If you have been affected by other types of motion sickness such as traveling by airplane or amusement park rides, you may be more susceptible.

We want you to have the most enjoyable whale watching trip on Monterey Bay, so here are 10 Tips to Prevent Seasickness.

  1. Eat bland foods. Avoid spicy or rich foods, the night before or day of your whale watching tour.
  2. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding coffee.
  3. Avoid alcohol the night before. Even if you are not prone to seasickness, alcohol may bring it on.
  4. Stay out in the fresh air. If you are feeling nauseous, avoid heading towards the bathroom. Instead, head to the back of the boat.
  5. Choose a place near the middle of the boat on the lower level where there is less motion.
  6. Keep your eyes on the horizon or in the direction of the boat moving forward. Do not sit facing backwards.
  7. Try to isolate yourself from others who are suffering from seasickness.
  8. Eat crackers and/or ginger candy and drink ginger ale or 7-up to settle your stomach.
  9. Be well rested. Feeling tired or exhausted may make you more susceptible to feeling ill.
  10. Take over-the-counter medications such as Bonine or Dramamine. If severely prone to seasickness, take one tablet the night before your tour and one the morning of, one hour prior to your trip. If you take these medicines when you start to feel nauseous, it is already too late and they may make you feel worse not better.
